The GEMSTONE Committee is dedicated to improving the standard of care for patients with gynecologic cancers through the dissemination of educational content for healthcare providers that addresses key clinical topics.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham

Dr. Birrer is a Professor of Medicine, OB/GYN, and Pathology, as well as a member of the Experimental Therapeutics Program at the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Previously, Dr. Birrer was the Director of Medical Gynecologic Oncology and the Gynecologic Cancer Research Program at the Gillette Center for Gynecologic Oncology, Massachusetts General Hospital and the Leader for the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center Gynecologic Cancer Program. Dr. Birrer earned his medical degree and PhD in Microbiology and Immunology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and his Medical Oncology Fellowship at the Medicine Branch, Clinical Oncology Program at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham

Dr. Arend is an Assistant Professor at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and an Associate Scientist for the Experimental Therapeutics Program at UAB’s O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center. She received her medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Arend completed her residency at Columbia Presbyterian and her research and clinical fellowships in Gynecologic Oncology at The University of Alabama at Birmingham.

University of Pennsylvania

Dr. Burger is currently Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Director of Clinical Research, and Director of the Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship Program at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Burger received his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from Harvard and his medical degree from New York University. From there, he completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Pennsylvania and a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of California, Irvine.

Don S. Dizon, MD

Lifespan Cancer Institute

Alumnus: Dr. Dizon is the Director for Women’s Cancers at the Lifespan Cancer Institute, Director of Medical Oncology at Rhode Island Hospital, and Associate Professor of Medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He was the founder and former Director of the Oncology Sexual Health Clinic and was previously the Clinical Co-Director of Gynecologic Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center. He received his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine, followed by a Medical Oncology Fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Dizon was an active member of the GEMSTONE Committee from 2017–2018.

Oliver Dorigo, MD, PhD

Stanford University

Dr. Dorigo is Director of the Gynecologic Oncology Clinical Care Program at Stanford Cancer Center and Director of the Mary Lake Polan Gynecologic Oncology Research Laboratory at Stanford University School of Medicine. He also serves as the Fellowship Program Director for both Stanford University and University of California, San Francisco. He earned his medical degree from the University of Heidelberg in Germany and received his PhD in Molecular Biology from University of California, Los Angeles. He completed his fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at UCLA School of Medicine/Cedars Sinai Medical Center.

Dr. Herzog is currently Deputy Director of University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute, Vice-Chair of the Obstetrics & Gynecology Safety Committee, and a Paul & Carol Flory Endowed Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Previously, he was Director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Columbia University Medical Center. Dr Herzog received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed his fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at Washington University School of Medicine.

Washington University

Dr. Powell is Chief of the Gynecologic Oncology Division and an Associate Professor for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Washington University School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Michigan State University. Dr. Powell completed his internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Ohio State University Hospitals and Clinics and his fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at Washington University School of Medicine.

University of California, Irvine

Dr. Randall is an Associate Professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Director of Medical Education in Gynecologic Oncology, and the Director of Fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology for the University of California, Irvine. She received her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Louisville and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology there. She conducted her fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of California, Irvine and received her Master of Advanced Studies in Advanced Clinical Research from the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. Slomovitz is currently a Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and of Human Genetics at the Miller School of Medicine and the Division Chief of Gynecologic Oncology at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL. He received his medical degree from Rutgers University and completed his fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center where he still serves as an associate adjunct professor.

Dr. Doo is currently a Clinical Fellow at the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. He received his undergraduate degree from Emory University and his medical degree from UAB. Dr. Doo completed his residency at University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, CO.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham

Kathryn Lyle is a Nurse Practitioner for The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Division of Gynecologic Oncology. She provides direct patient care and genetic counseling to gynecologic oncology patients and manages chemotherapy infusions and other oral targeted therapies. Kathryn received her Master of Science in Nursing from The University of Alabama at Birmingham with a concentration in Adult Gerontology and Women’s Health.
